Down in the River to Pray

God of liberation,
who chooses the ones
from the most oppressed nations,
you call us to look for
your saving grace
in the shadow places of your world:

in Hebrew mid-wives,
a Levite woman,
and the daughter of a Pharaoh;
in refugees
who traversed the wild seas
or the single mother of three

the people we do not see.

Shake us awake
to your saving grace
still being birthed
in unexpected places
in a papyrus basket,
down a river,
among the reeds
where your salvation is always taking seed.
