the Politics of Passover

God of politics
you come to those downcast and dismissed
enslaved and weighed down in mortar and bricks
bringing food and freedom:
a pathway to your kingdom.

May we learn how to eat
with loins girded, sandals on feet
staff in hand, on the edge of our seat,
waiting and watching
as you break the chains
of the oppressive reigns
and the systems sustained
on the backs of the disdained.

For you have chosen
the beaten-down and the broken
to be your people:
taking residence in the persecuted and the feeble.

Shake us awake, make us alert
to your Spirit passing over the least of these
in the shadows and the dirt.
